Hijama (Wet Cupping)

In Hijama there's a Cure and Blessings

“Indeed the best of remedies you have is cupping (hijama)…” [Saheeh al-Bukhaaree]

What is Hijama?

Hijama, also known as wet cupping, is a traditional therapeutic practice that has been utilized for centuries to promote holistic health and well-being. Predominantly practiced within Muslim communities, Hijama involves creating a vacuum effect on specific areas of the body to draw out stagnant blood and toxins, facilitating natural healing.

The term “حجم (hajama)” translates to “to reduce in volume,” which refers to the therapeutic reduction of blood volume through the extraction process. This method is employed both to maintain health in those who are not experiencing illness and to treat specific ailments.

How Hijama Works

During a Hijama session, specialized cups are applied to the skin, creating a vacuum that gently draws blood to the surface. This process helps remove accumulated blood that may interfere with circulation, along with impurities such as:

  • Abnormal red blood cells
  • Heavy metals
  • Cholesterol
  • Certain white blood cells

The blood extracted during Hijama is believed to contain harmful substances, making this therapy an effective way to detoxify the body. Research indicates that the composition of the blood released during Hijama differs significantly from that of healthy blood, highlighting its potential health benefits.

Benefits of Hijama

  • Detoxification: Effectively removes toxins and impurities from the bloodstream.
  • Improved Circulation: Enhances blood flow, promoting overall health.
  • Pain Relief: Alleviates discomfort associated with various conditions.
  • Enhanced Immune Function: Supports the body’s natural defenses.
  • Stress Reduction: Promotes relaxation and emotional well-being.

Authentic Hadith on Hijama

Hijama, or wet cupping, is a form of medical treatment highly recommended by Shari'ah. The practice has deep roots in Islamic tradition, as evidenced by the experiences of the Prophet Muhammad (Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam), who underwent cupping numerous times.

  1. Narrated by Abu Hurayrah: Abu Hind cupped the Prophet Muhammad in the middle of his head. The Prophet said, “The best thing by which you treat yourself is hijama.” (Abu Dawud 5:2097)

  2. Abu Hurairah reports: The Prophet Muhammad stated, “Whoever has hijama done on the 17th, 19th, or 21st of the month, it will be for him a cure from every illness.” (Sahih al-Jaami 5968)

  3. Reported by Abdullah ibn Mas’ud: The angels commanded, “Oh Muhammad, order your ummah (nation) with hijama.” (Tirmidhi 3479)

  4. According to Abdullah ibn Abbas: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, “I did not pass by an angel from the angels on the night journey except that they all said to me, ‘Upon you is hijama, O Muhammad.’” (Sunan ibn Maajah 3477)

Foundations of Prophetic Medicine

Ibn al-Qayyim outlines three foundational principles of the medicine of the body:

  1. Preservation: Maintaining and protecting existing health through proper nutrition, diet, and lifestyle habits.

  2. Protection: Avoiding harmful elements in nutrition, environment, and lifestyle to safeguard health.

  3. Extraction: Removing toxins and foreign bodies that cause illness. Hijama is one of the most effective methods for this purpose, as demonstrated through experience and study.

The practice of Prophetic medicine emphasizes evidence-based results and stands as one of the most effective forms of healing.

  • Avoid: Red fatty meats, fast food, and overly sweet or spicy foods.
  • Fasting: It’s recommended to fast for at least 3 hours before your session; hydration is allowed, but avoid solid food.
  • Shower: While it’s not mandatory, taking a shower before Hijama can be beneficial, especially if you have thick blood.
